Of Nerds and Hair (mostly nerds) – The Daryl Lukas Story

Many people don’t seem to realize this but, there’s a lot more to nerds than meets the eye. A lot of people just think of introverted humans, who like tech and live in fandoms. While, there’s  some ounce truth to this (ok maybe more than an ounce), its not the ONLY thing to nerds. Nerds also have great hair. (You’ll see this in a minute, keep reading).

When I found out who I’d be interviewing for the project I was super excited. I mean yeah he’s an awesome person but mostly I was excited that I would get to see his hair up close.

Daryl Lukas is one of those people who I suppose in hindsight I can say has always been one or two people away from my circle. I saw him a lot the first few years of my life at UNZA and when I stopped seeing him I really thought nothing more of it. It wasn’t strange to not see people after a few years.

When I did, on occasion, spot him I notice he sported dreadlocks and I guess I can say in this regard I watched them grow.  (This makes me sound like a great stalker but I promise I have a point somewhere.) Let me explain, in a select section of the natural hair community (whether he knows this or not) Daryl is a big deal. Well his hair is anyway. So of course as a naturalista I was super psyched to be handed Daryl’s hair, erm, his story on a silver platter to share with the world. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

So, what’s your story?

I’m not really good at telling my story… I’m a software developer, currently working for iConnect. I’m also co-founder of few startup ventures like Hackers Guild. I’m a huge nerd. I love making things. And breaking things… And that’s all I can think of right now.

How Would Your Best Friends Describe You?

Introverted geek.

How old are you?

Turning 24 on August 2nd.

In What Ways Are You The Same As Your Childhood Self?

My overactive imagination and habit of daydreaming. (*fingers crossed you never lose this super power*)

When have you been most satisfied in your life?

Every time I finish an awesome video game. It’s usually followed by a feeling of emptiness. (Yup I can relate, usually happens to me after watching some good anime or reading a great book *sigh*)

Who’s your favourite superhero?

This is a difficult question for me. I love too many. But my top two would be Superman and the Hulk.

What is your super power?

I think social awkwardness. No one does it like me. (well, everyone has to be good at something, right?)

Star wars VS Star Trek?

Another difficult question. But I’m gonna say Star Trek. It’s more… intellectual. (aaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!)

Tea or Coffee?

*sips coffee*

What was the last picture you took with your phone?

A pack of Pedigree dog food for my Alex.

If You Could Live In A Book, Tv Show Or Movie, What Would It Be?

Star Wars.

Who’s your favourite artist/musician?

If You Could Bring One Musician Back From The Dead, Who Would It Be And Why?

Bob Marley. The world need more of his music

What song best describes your work ethic?

Work – Rihanna. Because that’s all I do lately. Work, work, work.

What is your Memento Mori (reminder of mortality)?

I don’t really have one. My birthday usually does the trick.

What’s your pet peeve?

Noise. People raising the voices.

What’s your favourite smell in the whole world?

Food. Any food. (They do say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach hehehe)

What’s the secret to your good hair? (tell us all)

Ha! There really isn’t any secret.

(The natural hair community refuses to accept this as a legit answer *raises pitchfork*)

Describe your style

What? Like Fashion? I don’t think I have one. Whatever my mood is on that day. But I love my hoodies.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?

“Nice Hair.” (We really do say this all the time)

If you could have your enemy locked up in a room and tortured for a day, how would you torture them?

I’m not sure who will be reading this so I’m gonna go with the least evil method I can think of. Ramsay Bolton’s (Snow) work on Theon Greyjoy (in Game of Thrones). He broke the poor guy. *blink blink, takes notes*

If I gave you an elephant, why and where would you hide it?

Hide it? I would ride that thing to work, jamming Prince Ali (Aladdin) on a boombox. (At this point I proceeded to watch that epic scene *grabs popcorn*)

If You Could Master One Skill You Don’t Have Right Now, What Would It Be?

Social Skills (A skill is a skill)

What is your greatest achievement to date?

Getting this far in my career with no university degree, only passion and a desire to learn.

Which Are You More Likely To Fight For, Love Or Money? Why?

Money. I can’t pay bills and buy my man toys with love. (but love don’t cost a thing🎵)

What Would Be Your “Perfect” Day?

Any quiet day with food, beers, fast internet and gaming.

What’s Something Too Serious To Be Joked About?

It’s 2016. Almost everything is taken seriously these days. (This is true..)

If You Could Have The Answer To Any Question, What Would That Question Be?

Question 1. “So, what’s your story?”. I feel like I’m not saying much.

If You Were On Death Row, What Would Your Final Meal Be?

Just one meal? I would go for a bowl of Ramen and Debonair’s Something Meaty pizza with an ice cold Castle Lite.

So the interview wouldn’t have been complete without a photo shoot. I succeeded in luring Daryl to a secluded (no not so secluded really, people were passing and a guard was within sight) of a mall parking lot and proceeded to “shoot” him. I asked him to act natural which he did…..

DSC_5355By far the next one was my favorite picture. Turns out Daryl was hunting Pokemon the whole time. . . nerds…
